The Fading came for everyone • Skin, then hands, then the face—the body going transparent by degrees • The world is learning to live half-seen
Maren Cross built her life on visibility • Fifteen years running Open Grid, forcing institutions into the light, certain that being seen was the best thing a person could be…
MAREN CROSS’S HAND in her mother June’s.
The blanket in June’s lap.
The hum of the vents.
Maren’s thoughts were still running. Sandra, the forms, Nadia.
Her thoughts were quieter now. Softer. Like a television in another room.
Then softer than that.
Eventually, Maren couldn’t hear them at all.
June breathed.
In.
Out.
Her eyes were closed.
The chair creaked.
Light from the window rested in a rectangle on the floor.
June’s hand was warm.
The bones were close under the skin.
Maren could feel each knuckle.
The grip was loose.
Not holding on, simply there.
The vents hummed.
The floor under Maren’s feet felt cool through her shoes.
The window was warm where the sun touched it.
June breathed.
Maren breathed.
Soon, they were breathing with the same rhythm.
The light on the floor slowly moved.
The rectangle was narrower than it had been.
Small bright points, drifting. Dust.
Mother and daughter in a dim room. One almost invisible. One almost blind.
The chair holding their weight.
The building around them holding the heat.
Her mother’s shawl was orange.
The blanket, a pale mixture of tan, beige and white.
June’s hand in Maren’s hand.
The things in the room.
A room someone cared for.
The room was calm…remained calm…and nothing happened, yet… and the calmness was full.
Then June coughed. Small. Dry.
She shifted.
Her hand moved in Maren’s, adjusting.
Maren blinked.
The forms. Sandra. The car home.
Her thoughts wandered back.
Maren lingered for another moment.
Then slowly let go of June’s hand.
Stood.
Picked the shawl up from the arm of the chair and settled it around her mother’s shoulders.
Kissed the top of her head.
