OUR tongue votes. OUR body counts the ballots.
I noticed something that’s been bugging me.
About 60–70% of the foods I like fall in my “safe” zone.
And about 60–70% of the foods I hate fall in my “danger” zone—things I’m supposedly sensitive to.
So I started asking: how much of “taste” is my tongue… and how much is my brain?
It turns out a LOT (but obviously not all) of it is our brain. Because “taste” is not just taste.
My tongue can only report a few basic signals. Most of what we call flavor is smell + texture + temperature + memory. Our brain bashes it all together and turns it into one experience.
And our brain has a job: keep us alive.
That means it keeps score, quietly.
Did this food make me feel good… or did it make me feel like crap?
If a food keeps making me feel like poo, my brain tags it as “not safe.” Often one bad time is enough. That’s how one rough night with a drink turns into a lifelong “nope” when I smell it.
So a dislike isn’t always “I’m picky.” Sometimes it’s “body knows best.”
The mind can even alter how things taste. When my body is sick or stressed, taste and smell can get weird—metallic, bitter, flat. That kind of change is well known.
The vicious cycle goes like this:
Food → bad reaction → brain marks it → it tastes worse → you avoid it → the dislike gets stronger.
Now, if you’re really bored or curious, you can do a blind taste test, but I’d seriously advise against it. Remember what happened to the cat? You could have a serious reaction and end up in the ER. It's not pretty. And scary.
It's much safer to do an intolerance DNA test via services like 5Strands or have tests run by your local allergy doctor. Seriously. Drop the blindfold.
The main point I’m taking from all my research is this:
Some “preferences” aren’t preferences. They’re warnings.
That said, have you ever had a food you “hated” that later turned out to mess you up physically?

My brain tells me I need crunchy. And I hate mushy (it’s why I can’t do guacamole). I know guac is good for me, and it tastes okay, but I will die from potato chips. ;)
